Food for your brain AND your tummy!

Akili Preparatory School not only provides the girls from Obunga with education but also currently runs a feeding program. Food for your brain AND your tummy! The girls receive a nutritious meal daily and are growing stronger and smarter every day!
For the feeding program, Akili rents land in the outskirts of Kisumu and grows corn to feed the girls. On my very first work day in Kisumu, I went to help at the farm. It turns out that identifying holes on the ground to throw the seeds into is more difficult than expected. My vision may not be the best but I do have skills with the hoe!
Even though I was sore for a couple of days after, I am just so happy and grateful to be part of this amazingness. Seeing these happy and healthy faces just makes it all worth it!

A GIRL, Not a Boy

Akili is a school for girls! Educating girls changes their life trajectories. Studies have documented that school children are effective change agents; whatever is learned is likely to be transferred to the community. An educated girl marries later, has fewer children that she can take care of, and earns more wages hence eradicating the vicious circle of poverty. Let's educate our girls and empower women in Kenya!

These beautiful women are Lilian, Nancy and Jacinta. They are the teachers at Akili Preparatory School in Kisumu. They do a great job with our girls and their dedication is inspiring. They are really making a meaningful change in their community!

Lilian, Nancy and Jacinta are teachers in a mission, educate girls in Obunga!

On Wednesdays, the girls at Akili take a break from their uniforms. They call it "to get dress as civilians". They are all very fashionable and spunky!

In the lower grades, when a girl gets a right answer, this is the song their friends sing to her, while she is dancing in front of he classroom with both hands on her waist:

Well Done
Well Done
Thank You
Thank You
Try Again Another Day
A Very Good Girl
A GIRL, Not a Boy
We Love You Double!!!

Karibu Kenya

It's been over a week since I got to Kisimu, Kenya. There was enough time to settle in, learn about the routine and meet all the amazing people that I will be working with for the next 3 months and building the Akili Preparatory School and Library!

There is just so much happening here and the girls are so cute and so inspiring! I can't wait to show your more!

Last week, the Akili girls got their new uniforms and they are looking very pretty in it.

Taking the girls to town to buy new shoes.

Girls in their new uniforms.

Next step is to build them a new school. The girls are being evicted from the church where the school is currently at. We already have a beautiful land, we are working on building a fence. We still need to prepare the terrain and relocate the stream. This way we can make sure that the new school building will be secure for the years to come.
